It was asked, What music does a female Engineer listen to? Since I graduated from High School in the mid nineties, most of the music I like is from that time period: Alice in Chains, Tool, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Black Crows, Sarah McLachlan, Stabbing Westward, Weezer, Counting Crows. The summer after I graduated I got a job at a small Land Surveying Company doing drafting work from 4:00 pm to midnight. Most of the people I worked with were kids my age that had taken drafting in High School. They introduced me to Rage Against the Machine, for which I am truly grateful. Sing it with me:
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!
One of the guys I worked with, Fred, was really into Techno: Orbital, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Death in Vegas, DJ Shadow, Massive Attack (the theme song to House is Teardrop by Massive Attack), Tricky, and Machines of Loving Grace. I had such a crush on Fred but, being a socially inept nerd, I had no idea what to do about it.
When I went away to college, I made friends with a girl who lived in my dorm. She introduced me to Ministry.
Lately I’ve been listening to Cake a lot. It’s upbeat and helps work go by quicker.
I think that’s enough for now. I’ll post more on the subject some other time.

I'm a big Ska fan, actually - I find it meets the majority of my "F*CK the world" lyric needs...
The Specials, Reel Big Fish, Bad Manners, etc...
Marvin - Cake is great. The only song I can think of that got any radio play is The Distance. They did a cover of I Will Survive, too. That was around 1996
cake is good too
*checks cleavage* yep, all woman. I don’t play an instrument.
I can take the test to get my stamp anytime now. I just need 3 P.E.s to sign for me. I only know the one I work for. plus, I'm a scared of the responsibility implied by having a stamp.
Sure I'm curious. I do like Beck. I‘ve heard of Tatu. I like that song. I’ll look into them.
28 isn't too young, technically. It's a 4 year degree, then 4 years working under a P.E. it took me 6 years to get the degree because I changed majors and I was working.
MOTW's husband is a civil engineer too
Update: Tatu is far too perky for me. like Ace of Base or ABBA.
yup, sure opened up my eyes.
I'll check them out when I get home.
Being a zealot isn't a bad thing.
Better than being one of those people who say "oh, I like a little bit of everything".
I think music is something you’re supposed to feel passionately about.
yup, I have DSL at home and work.
I downloaded a bunch of their songs. I recognize "pull me under". Great song. I'm going to buy "Train of Thought" and put it on my mp3 player so I can give it a through listen.
I'm always open to trying new things.
I really don't have the creative talent needed to be a good musician.
Dream Theater is kinda Megadeath-y
I took a look at wikipedia's list of progressive rock musicians. A Perfect Circle, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Zeppelin, Moody blues, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rush, Santana, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool - all bands i enjoy
good music is timeless. :)
I don't think it's the vocals, I'm not sure what it is. but it reminded me of megadeth's youthanasia album.
I could probably learn how to play an instrument, but i can't see me writing music.
Progressive rock, eh? The only actual songs that WMP listed in the 'Progressive Rock' genre was 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' and I don't have a 'Progressive Metal' section. But that's ok, I like a little bit of everything.
Except for most rap and new country and most songs from 1995 and up or before 1950s and not especially big band stuff or a lot of the Christmas Music. But other than that, yeah, I like pretty much everything.
I hate country music except for Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. I listen to a little rap, mostly just Eminem.
Deon - I was listening to the Dream Theater this morning and one of the songs reminded me of the music Satan plays in the Kids in the Hall sketch Bobby Torrance verses Satan.
Dream Theater is pretty good, but Tool is way better. Tool is more Sensual.
I've not invested the time to grasp Tool. I mean, I hear Tool tunes on the radio and they are OK, I guess.
By all reliable indicators, I should like it though.
What should I start with if I was to buy a CD?
I’d go with Aenima only because my favorite song, Pushit, is on that album.
Lareralus is their latest and would be my second choice. Undertow has the songs that were big in the 90’s, Sober and Prison Sex.
Excellent commentary folks. Excellent. *air guitar*
Just sayin.......
Not stayin......
Fishout!
Ahhh, paradox!!
You tell us to sing along with you, but the lyrics are Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me! therefore we shouldn't sing along with you. But if we don't sing those lyrics, it implies that we would do what you tell us, so we should sing along...but...erg... ERROR ERROR *explodes like Star Trek computer*
Good point Mikey.
Well crap, I can't stop singing now anyway, I mean right in the middle of a song? How rude.
